Starring Uhm Tae Woong as Kim Seon Woo, Lee Joon Hyuk(prosecutor from City Hunter) as Lee Jang Il and Lee Bo Young as Han Ji Weon.
I decided to watch this drama because it beat out the tv ratings for Rooftop Prince and it has really good reviews. So, for those that are interested, I'm gonna review The Equator Man up until 'Big' and Jaejoong's new drama comes out.
It starts out very dramatic, with the music and everything lol. I wasn't expecting that at all. Jang il is ready to kill some people who I don't know and they try to stop him. He starts crying because it seems like Jang Il and Seon Woo are friends so obviously it would be hard to kill him and President Jin(?)
All of a sudden, we jump back 15 years to get the premise of the story. Good, because I'm confused lol. We have Seon Woo, as a high schooler who comes to class late, I can tell he's like the badass, cool cat in the school. HE IS SOOOOOOOOOOOO CUTE!!!!!!!!!!! Jeez. Then we have Jang Il who is number 1 in the class and they are gonna start there midterm exams. Right before they start, thugs come in the room demanding Jang Il. Oh, but why? The class president? They must mean Seon woo. But nope, Jang Il gives himself away because he breaks his pencil in anger. The thugs take out the teacher, the kids sit back and do nothing as the thugs take Jang Il away because his father didn't pay them back. Alright. Makes sense in the typical Korean drama world. Seon Woo gets up to go after the thugs. Like a badass, he beats them up and Jang Il just walks back inside to take his exam. Ummmm...the heck? Seon Woo comes back inside with a bloody lip too and finish the exam. To thank him, Jang Il offers his answers so Seon Woo can copy. Aww, man. I wish cheating was that easy! Nowadays, teachers walk around, the scantrons aren't that small, and everyone has different versions. But then again this was 15 years ago from modern day I think.
After school, Jang Il thanks him and suggests that if Seon Woo can protect him from the thugs, Seon Woo can copy his answers the rest of the midterm exams. Sounds like a deal to me! But Seon Woo says he doesn't care whether he lives or dies and he certainly doesn't care about his grades. However, later that night, his dad praises him for his sudden improvement lol. Mmhhm, he said he didn't care about the grade but he still copied Jang Il.
His father takes him out to Korean BBQ to celebrate. Jang Il is also there with his father and as they are eating, the thugs show up again. They embarrass them in front of everyone at the restaurant. They pour sojo on Jang Il's head, then brand his father. DAMNNNNNN. WHERE THE HECK IS THE POLICE. You're in the restaurant, you see a bunch of thugs come in, wreaking havoc, branding a poor guy in public, wouldn't you do something?? Seon Woo all of a sudden gets up and smashes one of them in the head with a chair. Wow. He goes into an alley with them and beats them up however he's getting his ass kicked too. Jang Il's father wants to turn away and bring him, but Jang Il can't just let him get beat up. He goes to fight them as well. However, more thugs show up and they start running around all over the place until finally they get away. Cute. That is a cute bromance. If I didn't know any better, they've fallen in love with each other. But this reminds me of Warrior Baek Dong-Soo and they're bromance did not end well.
Jang Il's dad got involved with the loan sharks because he turned into an alcoholic and gambler once his mother died. He wants to become a prosecutor so that he can destroy the loan sharks. Seon Woo says not to become a prosecutor just for vengeful reasons. Jang Il then falls to the ground unconscious. Oh.
Seon Woo takes him to a hospital room and now they're friends! Cute! They go to school and then the principal comes in, demanding for Seon Woo. He says the man he beat up messed up his intestines so now he's suspended. He sticks up for Jang Il because he was the one that brutally beat 1 of the thugs. He takes the blame and once again, Jang Il just walks away. WHAT THE HECK! Seon Woo stuck up for him twice! I know that Jang Il is feeling pretty guilty. That night, Seon Woo's father comes and gets on his knees, begging for forgiveness. Doesn't work though, Seon Woo is suspended still. Welp.
One day during his detention or whatever, Jang Il comes in to ask why he stuck up for him. He says he doesn't need his help. Seon Woo shoots back and starts mocking him, hitting a nerve because Jang Il punches him. They start fighting and the teacher comes in. He hits Seon Woo on the head with a pole (OUCH) since it looked like Seon Woo was beating up Jang Il. He asks why Jang Il is there and he says he wants to tutor Seon Woo. So, that night, they start tutoring and its the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Well. CUTE. This seriously reminds me of Warrior Baek Dong-Soo, it's hurting my heart lol.
Chairman Jin comes to check on a construction site and Jang Il's dad happens to be one of the workers. His secretary explains that his dad has been asking for a scholarship fund for his son Jang Il since he's the first in his class. However, he's gonna be fired. Man........more money problems.
A girl, listen ins on a conversation that Chairman Jin has with someone(presumbly her father) and she gets pissed. Jin is apparently blaming him for embezzling the company money. She goes outside and smashes someone's car that Seon Woo is in because he was running from some thugs. She sees him in inside and he tells her to be quiet because the thugs asks if she's seen him. Once they're gone, Seon Woo instead takes the big rock and smashes the windshield completely, thanks her and goes off. Cute?
The next day, Jang Il leaves the school to go home with the umbrella because it's raining. A new girl that transfers, asks if he could accompany her with the umbrella to the intersection. He does and they walk home. CUTE. I wish that would happen to me. A cute boy offers to walk me to the intersection because it's raining. Wah. In America that doesn't happen. Boo.
After that, the girl is seen painting a gorgeous picture and Jang Il like a creep but totally cutesy, goes inside to tell her that. She gives him a gift, a poster, for thanking him. She tells him to open it later. Later, he opens it lol, it's a sketch of himself. Cute. He goes back like 2 minutes later and says he'll accompany her to a destination that's an hour away. CUTE!!!!!
Seon Woo's father finds out that he doesn't have much time left to live after a doctor visit. He sits down to write a handwritten will. Awwww.
Jang Il like a creep, follows the transferred girl home and finds out she's the daughter of Seon Woo's childhood friend's dad. Was that confusing lol? Seon Woo is friends with her, Sumi is her name I think. Jang Il and Seon Woo ran into her father and Jang Il didn't like him for some reason. This replays in his head as he goes back home and throws away the drawing she gave him. WHAT. BLEH! So the next day when they were supposed to go on a date, Soo-mi is left standing alone, not realizing she's being stood up. Seon Woo and Jang Il are together at a bookstore, when all of a sudden, Seon Woo goes outside because he saw her walk by. She's not in a happy mood and wants him to pretend he doesn't know her. Then Jang Il steps outside. Awkward. She asks Seon Woo if he knows her father is a shaman(looked down upon in Korean society) so she walks away and tells him to leave to. So that's why he wouldn't meet her. Her father is a shaman. But that doesn't give him the right to judge her!! He liked her before he found out she was a shaman, why is it a big deal now!!!
Later that night, Seon Woo's father tells him to come out for his birthday to meet someone important. He tells him he has liver cancer and he may not have much longer to live. It gets very emotional between the two and he slaps Seon Woo for the first and last time in order to get him to come out tomorrow for his birthday. He plans on giving him away to Chairman Jin because he is his real father.
The next day, his father goes to see Chairman Jin. Apparently they have more history than what we've seen, alot if things went down. Chairman Jin is now the villain of the story and we see why. Chairman Jin kills Seon Woo's father after they have a death match between the elderly. After he kills him, Jang Il's dad saw everything, he was looking through the window. Uh oh.
Sun woo is on his way to meet his father when all of a sudden he runs into a body hanging in mid air. As he gets up...it's his father. DAMNNNNNNN Woah.
I definitely wasn't expecting that. Now the wheels are starting to turn in my head. This drama will be interesting. I'll continue watching. Lee Hyunwoo is now my new Korean boo, yall can't have him!! LOL. The only thing that irks me in this drama is the damn soundtrack. They had Coldplay and some Spanish music playing in the background, the hell!! But I'll stick around to see how Seon Woo becomes and how long this bromance lasts.
LEE HYUN WOO IS MY NEW KOREAN BOO! Yall can have Siwan from ZE:A, I knew he looked real familiar...
