Bridal Mask Episode 1 Review

For starters, I have been waiting for this drama for a week now, everyday checking for it to finally air in Korea, and now, thanks to the amazing people at Viki, they subbed that hoe in 1 day. Yall my ni__as for life.

In order to understand the era this drama is set in, it's best to go to Dramabeans, because she explains it briefly. I've never seen a drama in this era, I've only been to Joseon, so I myself was confused. I don't think you necessarily need to know what's going on in history because the majority of these Fusion era dramas are fiction-based but with non-fictional characters (Warrior Baek-dong soo, Sungkyukwan Scandal). However I want to know what's going on so that I don't look like 0.o when they make references, so I suggest you look up the history behind modern-day Korea!

A funeral procession is being held for Lee Gong, someone who helped bring the annexation of Japan and Korea. The citizens are upset and what not, saying he doesn't deserve such a grand funeral since he's a traitor. Kang to(Joo-won, my baby daddy) arrives and forces the crowd to mourn, literally making his soldiers draw their swords towards the people! All of a sudden, a woman throws a rock at the picture of Lee Gong and Kang to chases after her. She's finally caught, but then Gaksital (Bridal Mask) comes out and starts chaos. The soldiers are chasing after him, shooting, he's cursing the officials, hell breaks loose and what not. Gaksital rescues the girl as Joo Won shoots at them, but they get away.

We go back a month before and we see Kang to getting promoted for he captured Dam Sari, a man who needs to be captured for resistance. Kang-to's rival almost had him, but then he blew up the building and lost him. However, Kang-to is able to catch him and is now rewarded, meanwhile his rival is looking extra salty.

In the market place the next day, a woman is setting up to sell rice cakes, however, the people are extremely pissed at her for some reason and throw the rice cakes all over the place, saying she cannot sell with them when her son is Kang-to. Then, another man comes running through the streets calling out 'mother'. So she has two songs, Kang-to, and a retard. Kang-to is known as a traitor around the streets of Korea, even the kids won't hang out with them. In his car, he hears his mother calling out for Kang-san, his brother and he immediately rushes out. Evidently, the mother is bullied alot, this seems to happen more often than not. Kang-san ends up fighting with the man who knocked his mother's stuff over, he's getting his butt kicked. Kang-to steps up to save him and tells everyone to leave. He's pissed at his mother because she shouldn't be trying to sell at a place where she's not wanted, but she's mad that everything is his fault anyways for working with the Japanese. He throws money at her, telling her not to work here again, but she shoots back and slaps him. This was a sad scene man, sadddddd.

Kang-to goes home in frustration to pack up his things, now that he's been promoted, he has the money to eventually get his own place. He's worked hard to get where he's at, even if he had to sell out his country, it paid for his food. He's right in a way, do what you gotta do to survive. He leaves in anger and breaks a family photo of when Kang-to was younger, and Kang-san was normal. After he leaves, mother comes in and see the broken picture. She has a flashback of when things were normal.
Apparently, Kang-san was too an officer, but after being tortured (by the Japanese I guess, idk) he has somehow clicked off. He's not necessarily retarded because he's aware of things, but it seems like he has Down Syndrome...I'm not sure...

Kang-to goes to visit a friend Kimura Shunji, a school teacher, and they have a spar. Cute. Apparently Kang-to is staying with him for a while until he gets his own place now that he's been promoted.

Our heroine, Mak Dan, the one who threw the rock at the beginning and ran off with Gaksital, is at a circus and she performs? There's a scene of when she's holding onto a necklace of a sheathed knife, given to her by someone she loves evidently. She goes into flashback mode blah blah and the man she likes happens to be Kimura, but that's not revealed till later.
The circus is Pro-Gaksital, anti-imperialistic with the Japanese. Makes sense then as to who she is.

The next day, Mak Dan finds a newspaper with the headlines, 'Damsari is caught' and she looks upset. On the day of the trial, Damsari and others are sentenced to death and Mak Dan finds a way to break in, Damsari is her father. Oh? She all of a sudden yells out to Kang-to, 'You son of a bitch' and flies off the balcony. Hell breaks loose, fighting ensues.

Then, Gaksital shows up, and there's a close up of his face. Hmmm, this one looks different from when he first arrived earlier...hmm. Kang-to starts fighting Gaksital as Damsari and Mak Dan try to escape while they have the chance. Gaksital escapes, so Kang-to goes after Damsari and his daughter. He sees them escaping outside, so he runs after them. Meanwhile, the judge is in his room trying to get his freak on with a woman. She leaves, then Gaksital shows up.

Kang-to catches up and shoots someone, but it's not Damsari. At the same time, the judge falls out of the window, dead on the ground.

Kang-to runs back inside, following Gaksital, but he's distracted by soldiers, and his brother shows up, blowing a whistle. Wait a minute. How could his brother randomly show up? Knew it. He's Gaksital, or at least the main one I think, since I believe there are two.

Kang-to reports the officials about Gaksital and how he wants to catch Gaksital. Police chief Kimura Taro wants Kang-to to just focus on catching Damsuri and slaps his son Kimura Shinji, Kang-to's rival. Shinji is to catch Gaksital, while Kang-to catches Damsari.

This takes us back to present day with Kang-to shooting at Gaksital. In anger since they get away, he goes into Judge Choi's office again and notices something fishy about the Japanese flag. He opens the back of it and finds a picture of the Judge and Chief Taro. He reports this to his boss, police affairs director Kono Koji. Kang-to notices that in the picture, on Taro and Judge Choi's kimonos, is Gaksital's signature, kinda like how Zorro has a Z lol.

Koji deduces that Taro and his son Shinji have something cooked up their sleeves, which is true. Taro wants his son to kill Kang-to since he's figuring things out. Well then.
Koji scolds Taro for not being able to capture Gaksital within a month, so now Kang-to gets the case.

Just as Kang-to is about to go home at night, there's a gun pointing at him in the back, held by none other than Gaksital.

This is very interesting. It makes sense that there would be multiple Gaksitals, which is usual when there are masked crusaders trying to bring justice. I just want to know who it is!! We have 2 suspects, Kang-san who is Kang-to's mentally disabled brother, and Damsari. Why would Kang-san pretend to be retarded? Is he willing to kill his brother?? Is Kang-to willing to kill Kang-san??? OHHHH, man. This drama is perfect, BUTTTT, the flaw I see is the acting. Everyone is good, but some interactions aren't seamless. Like I can tell that their line is clearly scripted, it wasn't pulled off flawlessly. I really hate that I can notice that with actors. Everyone in this drama are good actors, I've seen just about all of them in a drama. When is Joo Won not pissed lol? I didn't watch Ojakgyo Brothers, I've only seen him pissed in Baker King Kam Takgu, when can he be happy lol??? Anyways, he's my baby daddy, his anger is sexy to me.
